You have seen the countless posts about how so-and-so makes thousands by affiliate marketing on their blog. And you sign up for an affiliate program and see nothing. Yep, nothing from it. There are seven key ways that you could do to help you maximize affiliate income and make them work for you.
Love the product.
You simply cannot be an advocate for a product that you are not passionate about. There are many things that I love and have come to depend on daily for running an online business as well as my everyday life. By first starting with a product that I know, trust and love will make it much easier to tell others about, and they will be more inclined to believe me because of this.
Keep it Relevant.
I cannot run a creative business and expect Kitchen Aid to pay me. I offer nothing for them, and they provide nothing for my readers. Sure I love my Kitchen Aid mixer, but that has zero to do with running an online business. I need to choose a product that is relevant to my niche. Creating and building successful creative businesses. Being an affiliate for a product that helps with either one of those will be more beneficial.
Do your homework.
Finding the best affiliate program to join can take some time. Don’t just join the ones you think will be “easy” money. Make sure that they pay out enough to be worth your time invested in promoting the products. There are tons of great products, but not all of them have great affiliate programs. You will find that it can be more profitable to promote products that have a bit higher price tag if you put in the work to get the most out of them.
Create a product to use along with it.
I love using the Divi theme on my blog. An excellent tool that I can offer my readers is ready to use page template. This is a “freebie” that I can offer my readers that provide value and encourage them to check out this fantastic product that I am promoting.

Show, don’t just tell.
I can talk about my love for the Divi theme until I am blue in the face but if I can’t show you reasons that you would love it for your site as well, then I am merely wasting my time. A quick video on setting up some fantastic backend features would be extremely beneficial and give potential buyers a “behind-the-scenes” look at the product.
Don’t rely on banner ads.
I know it can be easy just to pop an ad in your sidebar and hope that someone clicks on it. They won’t. This offers zero value to a potential customer. They don’t know what it is or why they should even click on it. You would be better off placing a graphic to the post you wrote about the product and giving away your freebie.
Be prepared to work for it.
Affiliate income doesn’t come easy. You will need to find many different ways to promote the product without just saying “buy this” before you start to see a consistent income from it.
Becoming an affiliate is not for every blogger. This takes quite a bit of time and content creation to make a successful go at it. You will notice that the bloggers who claim they make significant income from affiliate products have created some fantastic ways to build buzz about the product and offer added value to at no additional cost to the buyers.

Sarah Crosley
Founder of The Creative Boss
After years of trying to run an online business I have seen quite a few ups and a whole lot more downs. I spent hours every day researching how to make a go at some elusive, passive income. I felt like it was something that was just a myth, and then I figured out what the real meaning of passive income was: to work smarter, not harder. It’s not just sitting around watching the dollars pour into your bank account, but you can create products that will sell and still be sitting on the beach or at home in pajamas, and I want to share with you what worked for me. I don't want you to spend years trying, failing, and throwing in the towel.
