How to Maximize Results with ConvertKit Tags on WordPress

Creative Business Tips

If you’ve been around the blog a few times here at The Creative Boss, I’m sure you’re aware of how much we fangirl over ConvertKit - tracking our subscribers and sending tailored content #likeaboss.

Well, ConvertKit, you’ve one-upped yourselves. I’m impressed.

They’ve recently rolled out a powerful new feature that’ll put their WordPress plugin owners in automation heaven.

You can now assign tags right to your page visits. Yep, I’m serious. No need for your visitors to click a link or anything. If they’re already subscribed to your list - BAM!

As soon as they view the page, they’re tagged like graffiti on a train car.

This feature is incredibly useful to track the ones who’ve landed on your opt-in or sales page but not signed up. Now, it’ll automatically tag and place them into a nurture sequence in hopes to win them over and seal the deal.

Bravo, ConvertKit. 👏👏👏 https://giphy.com/embed/a0Lgc1JvbfS4o

Why Am I Tagging My Page Visits?

Again, the best way to utilize this feature is tracking those landing on your sales pages but not taking the next step to purchase.

As an online business owner, you can’t just bust through everyone’s computer screens like an overly-cheerful salesperson greeting each new visitor with a personalized sales pitch convincing them to purchase the answer to their problems from you before they even lay eyes on your site.

Damn, that mental image is kinda creepy, huh? Good thing that’s not an option, however...

If you only had a way to reel them back in and subtly guide them into a nurture sequence...

Well, now you can. #LoveTheFuture

But now you can with ConvertKit - and just so we’re clear, they must already be on your email list in order for the tag to work.

Unfortunately, we still can’t just tag any random web surfer and start sending them targeting emails.

But if that’s your jam, you can target Facebook ads towards them all day.

An alternative - and equally useful - reason for assigning tags on particular blog posts is to help keep track of what your subscribers are reading, so you can be sure to create more content especially catered to their interests and delivered straight to their inbox.

C’mon, they gave you the power to spam them - they deserve it.

How Do I Set Up Tags on Page Visits?

If you haven’t already checked out my post on Tags and Segments, be sure to read it for all the deets on utilizing the tags and segments feature in ConvertKit.

Setting up tags in ConvertKit is pretty straight-forward. If you create a system from the beginning, it won’t become a cluttered mess. I have “groups” of tags - such as Interest, Purchased, Webinar, etc. - so I can quickly scan down the list to find what I need.

If you want to add a new tag in ConvertKit, just click the Subscribers tab. From there, you’ll see two sections on the right - one for segments and one for tags - with a list below each one. Just click whichever one applies to what you’re needing and give it a title.

I’d recommend keeping your titles short but also make sense to any other team members if you choose to add them later on. You’re not going to want to spend all day answering questions about things that should be self-explanatory. [et_bloom_inline optin_id="optin_17"]

How Do I Add the Tags to My Page in WordPress?

After you’ve created the tag, head back over to the page or blog post to apply it.

Make sure your WordPress site is set up with the plugin installed and linked to your ConvertKit account.

Find the ConvertKit section on the dashboard where you create your pages (or blog posts) and choose the form that populates the page or just assign the tag.

Easy. Peasy.

*Note about the page visit tags: this feature will only work if the subscriber has a current subscriber ID cookie.

This means it may not always be 100% accurate, but it’ll help you catch some of those site visitors.

Tag and target them accordingly and they’ll start receiving those nurturing email sequences you’ve so carefully crafted in an attempt to reel them in as paying and loyal customers.

How Do I Set Up a Nurture Sequence in ConvertKit?

As amazeballs as these page visit tags are, they’re only going to benefit you if you’ve set up an automated email sequence to nurture the relationship between you and your client while moving them through your sales funnel.

After you’ve tagged all your subscribers with appropriate labels, you’ll have to set up what sequences are triggered by the tags attached to each subscriber.

Double check this one. You don’t want a completely irrelevant email sequence filling up your dedicated subscribers inbox.

For new sequences, click on Sequence > Create Sequence and add your emails. Be sure you set up the first email to trigger either immediately or designate a time for it to send after the initial subscription.

Determine how often you want the following emails in your sequence to hit your new subscriber’s inboxes.

I set up a sequence for my web design audit subscribers to receive an email drip throughout a whole month with one dropping every couple of days packed with helpful information on boosting their websites with a portion of the information provided from other sources I recommended.

Yes, I encourage you to share the works of others if you want to help your new subscribers solve the problems they came to you with because... you’ll get by with a little help from our friends.

You don’t want to present yourself as having all the right answers - if you want others to share and celebrate your work, you have to do the same for them.

You’ll see far more results much quicker.

How Do I Close the Sale?

Nurture your new subscribers. Establish a trusting relationship. Be transparent and relate to them on a personal level.

It’s important that your offer is in alignment with the customer’s initial problem and don’t go in for the kill right away by pushing your highest-priced product or service on them right away.

Ease them into becoming a loyal customer with smaller products giving them a good example of what you can offer at varying price points.

Make sure your freebies and cheaper offers are packed with enough value to impress them, so they won’t think twice about purchasing your next product.

Remember - don’t abandon ship if they don’t jump on your first offer.

People are naturally apprehensive.

Just keep nurturing the relationship and show them the value of your next offer - so when they decide to finally throw money at their problems, it’s a no-brainer to choose your product or service as their solution.

Don’t tell them the value of what you can offer. Show them.
